Second Life

I asked all the students to spend some time in Second Life and report on their experience.

Second Life is an interesting place, but's hard to figure out where to go even with the tutorials. I kept trying to teleport to events and ending up in a porn store in a mall....
I liked playing with all the ways to change your avatar's appearance. I thought it was hilarious that you could change things like boob size and make your character be bow-legged or have love handles. It really makes each avatar unique.
The clothing was a little odd because you can't see what it will look like until you put it on. I did like that you could edit details about the clothing. It was cool to see other people in cool outfits, but I think it kind of sucks that you have to buy things with real money to be able to really personalize or have a house.
I would like to experiment with creating objects because that souded neat, but I'm still so stuck on how to get around that I think it would take a lot of time to get to that point.
People on it are really weird. The people that tried to chat with me seemed really socially awkward, and I didn't really know what to say. I felt kind of rude walking away, but I guess that's more acceptable here.
It reminds me of a mix of World of Warcraft and the Sims. It has the interaction and exploring of WoW, but I got lost in that game, too. The concept is more related to the Sims, but I feel that they added so much stuff to it to make it realistic that you can't play around as much. I would like to be able to create and decorate a house like in the Sims, but i'm not going to pay for it. It would be interesting to see Red vs. Blue parody this like it did with the Sims and Halo.
It seems like there are neat things that happen, but I spend so much time trying to figure out what's going on that it's not practical. It was fun to experiment, however.

I agree. It was pretty exciting creating my avatar's appearance. I spent most of my time in that station trying as much as possible to avoid conversation with other people on Orientation Island. However one guy found me and starting asking questions. First he asked me generic questions like where I was from, my name, how old I was etc. Then he told me I had nice legs?????? Since when were those legs mine?? And what an odd thing to say. He also asked me if I had a boyfriend and when I replyed "yes" he said "bummer". Does he expect to meet the love of his life in Second Life?? So I ended the convo as quickly as I could and he went on his way.
I'm not that interested in using Second Life for socialization but I think it would be cool to learn how to design a house, an office, and whatever other possibilites lie out there.

Second Life is definately interesting. I have logged on quite a few times since class but everytime it seems that I get frustrated because I can't figure out what to do and sign off. Also a few times my session was cut short when the program froze. I have found a bunch of free objects walking around in the game but I don't like how most things cost real money. I agree with holly that I would like to have a house but again not possible because that costs money. I also would like to create objects but I can't figure out how to do that either:(

After an hours worth of time exploring the program Second Life, I realized how strange the system was. It solely relied on the interactions of strangers in an imaginary environment. The avatars were all different. And could be created according to one’s preferences. To some extent I found these avatars to be shallow figures in society. They each molded a persona in the world, up until manipulated by second life users. One could change the avatars body shape, hair color, and clothing. It was a bizarre. I thought the most interesting aspect of the program was interacting with complete strangers; people that felt the need to have a second life, instead of living their own.
All in all I thought that the program was amusing to use a couple if times, but anymore than that may be pushing it. The program is a way for humans to avoid interactions with others in this life by going on the computer for hours and making friends with complete strangers. People will never make forthcomings in this world by avoiding face-to-face conversations.

To be honest I really didn't not like secont life. I was never into the whole computer cames and its just seemed like a dumb game to me rather then another life on the internet. I was on it for about an hour and I difinitely don't know much about it. It was confusing but I don't really care to learn much more about it. the only thing that really amused me was making my avatar fly and changing its appearance. it was funny how you could literally change the entire way the person looked. Second Life was ust so weird to me and creapy that I don't think i will ever come to like it.
